Well most of you must be wondering that this is going to be a hub about all those electronics stuffs that we have in our home,yes its kindly related to that but with a difference that this hub brings you the inside of all these gadgets that is there electronic circuits. In this hub I will give you the most basic cricuit electronic circuit for hobbists and students.So lets join the world of electronics.
Power Supply
To make things really simple lets start with a simple power supply,and it is also the one they usually give you in your first electronics project.Well the reason is quite obvious because all electronis circuits require a DC power supply to work.You really do plug in the wires of your electronic items in AC mains supply but they do have AC to DC converters to to provide DC to the circuits.All this is done with a power supply in the right place.
This circuit is a small +5V power supply.The circuit will provide a regulated voltage to the external circuit which may also I am required in any part of the external circuit or the whole external circuit.The best part is that you can also use it to convert AC voltage to DC and then regulate it ,simlpy You need a transformer to make the AC main drop down to a safe value i.e 12-15 volts and then us a rectifier to convert AC into DC.
This circuit can give +5V output at about 150 mA current, but it can be increased to 1 A when good cooling is added to 7805 regulator chip. The circuit has over overload and therminal protection. The capacitors must have enough high voltage rating to safely handle the input voltage feed to circuit. The circuit is very easy to build for example into a piece of veroboard.
If you need other voltages than +5V, you can modify the circuit by replacing the 7805 chips with another regulator with different output voltage from regulator 78xx chip family. The last numbers in the the chip code tells the output voltage. Remember that the input voltage muts be at least 3V greater than regulator output voltage ot otherwise the regulator does not work well.
Dont forget to check the pin diagram before connecting the IC.

It depends on your current requirement for the supply. More current means a higher rating diode.

7805 means a volatage regulator whose output is +5v. Here it is a 78xx series IC and xx represent the output voltage.
So in order to make a supply of 12V you need 7812.
Rest circuit is same.

Hi, 7805 will work pretty fine for low current application. For variable output voltage you can use an op-amp or LM 317

Well it depends what output current you desire. You can use LM317 IC in your supply, that can not only provide adjustable voltage but can give output current upto 1.5A.

Hi, you would need four rectifiers if you want to form a bridge or two rectifiers if you are using a center tapped transformer. However you can easily get a rectifier IC in which the bridge rectifiers are embedded in it, you just need to connect the pins right way.

Hi abhinand, You can easily find the working of 7805 on its datasheet. I didn't get what you mean by input output condition, but if you mean voltage levels, then you can check the data sheet for max. input voltage levels and max. current ratings.

Hi Zoya, you can use the formula C=(5*i)/(V*f)
where,
i=output current
V=Peak voltage unregulated DC voltage
f=frequency in Hz
You can calculate peak voltage by using V=(1.4*Vrms) you can also measure it with a multimeter at the output of the bridge to get a real life voltage reading. You can use a small capacitor after the IC, it would work fine in stabilizing the IC.
Would I be ok changing the first 100uf capacitor to a 1000uf? I have a 50v rated capacitor and I'm going to be using a 9v power supply. I don't have a 100uf capacitor on hand.
Yea it would work just fine. The capacitor is meant to smooth the pulsating DC so 1000uf will smooth it further.

Hi Usman, Simply you can treat them as two regulator circuits, one for +ve regulated voltage and the other for -ve regulated voltage, but they both should be connected to a common ground.

Hi, Reena you can use a power transistor for additional current requirement as max. current for lm7805 is 1A the power transistor will create an alternate path for heavy current to flow. You can google the circuit diagram.
@vibhav, usually the input voltage should be kept greater than 5v but if it is less it would still give 5v if it is within the acceptable input voltage range, you should check you IC's datasheet for rated input voltage. However a lower voltage will make it hard to give regulated output.

hi. as we have used 100uF at i/p of regulator for smothning of the curve willl it be working as filter or it's necessary for us use the filter capacitor in ckt implimentation separatly?????
The 100uf capacitor is actually a filter capacitor used for smoothing the ripple coming from the rectified DC voltage. You don't need any further capacitors in such simple implementation. However larger more sophisticated power supplies use a LC filter where more capacitors and inductors are used to smooth the ripple.

You, wont get exact 5v unless you put a regulator IC for DC supply. But if you want a power supply without IC get a transformer that can give upto 5v, connect the diodes in bridge rectifier configuration and add capacitors in front of it. You can use appropriate resistors to make the voltage 5v if it is going above.
If you are using center tapped transformer use the diodes as rectifiers accordingly. There are plenty of circuits available on Google, so it wont be difficult finding a ckt diagram.

The amount of current flowing through a circuit with a transformer connected can be measured by connecting a multimeter in series. The rated (max. current) of the transformer is usually given with the transformer.

@odemwingie precious, These are voltage ratings of a capacitor that you can safely connect to a supply. The input of the supply must be less than the rated voltage of the capacitor. The capacitor hold a charge and can charge to that particular voltage as rated, if connected to a larger supply.
@ Ebsa, If you could elaborate further as you want two positive inputs or one +ve and one -ve input, I would able to answer effectively.

Walikum Assalam, check the polarities of the capacitors, whether they are connected in the right direction. If you are using polar capacitors, connect +ve terminal to the ground and -ve terminal to the other side. Also check the voltage at different phases of the ckt, using a multimeter, to know where the voltage reading is not right.

That way you can create two connections out of the +ve terminal of the 10VDC adapter, one will go into the 7805 and the other into 7905. The ground will be common for both ckts, i.e. the Gnd terminal of the adapter. But you have to check whether your adapter will support enough current, or else it will burn out.
Other way is to use separate 10 Vdc adapters, one for each ckt and then, do the same i.e. connect the ground terminals of the two ckts.
hello sir, i have one major doubt, i want an output on 5 v and 7805 is ideal but will it handle an input on 12 volts from a car battery??i think it is 35 amps 12v. pls help
Hi abhinand. Yes, if you read the datasheet of LM7805, it can handle input voltages upto 35v to give a regulated output of 5v. So, yes the car battery can be used as an input. But the LM7805 can only handle max. current of 1A so if you connect a load which draws greater than 1A, the IC will burn out. You can use fuse at the input to protect you IC. But if your requirement is of greater current output than use a power transistor along with the IC so that the large current could be handled.

The circuit diagram is same as above you only need to add a transformer connected to a bridge rectifier which then connects to the above circuit.

Hi Masood, You are the one seeking for help so you should return here, I wont be following you to help you! As for your question. You can replace the IC with LM317 which will provide you a variable voltage as per your requirement. The circuit is very simple and is given in the data sheet, the link is below:

The circuit will allow you to adjust voltage between 1.25-25v using the variable 5k potentiometer. Once you work out the exact value of the potentiometer which gives 4.5v, by adjusting it, you can replace the potentiometer with a fixed resistor. However you can calculate this resistance too using voltage divider rule.
hi , i got a qusetion to ask. If like say i am useing 4 circuits with 78xx ic , the total of current of those circuits is less then 1A around 0.8A, then i am useing transformer with 1.5A parallel those 4 circuits, it will destroy the LM78XX iC anot?
Well, I am not exactly able to get your question! If you are connecting the transformer in parallel to provide supply to the IC than it is fine, It won't burn it out. The max. current of LM78xx is 1A so make sure you don't exceed that value by connecting a greater load. It is always good to connect a protection like a fuse to protect your circuits.

Check the comment above. I have mentioned the formula for sizing. The capacitor at the input is very important as the output you get from the rectifier is pulsating DC, so too smooth it you have to use a capacitor. But if you are using a DC supply for input, you won't really need a capacitor. But using it at the output would still be beneficial to eliminate any oscillations.

If your output current requirement is of 2A than you have to buy a transformer which should have a rated current of above 2A. The diodes should also have a rated current of above 2A other wise they will burn out. As for the LM7805 IC or any other LM IC you are using, they have Max. current rating of 1A, so if you want to draw more current you also have to add a power transistor, to support that much current.

The waveform obtained from the output of a rectifier is pulsating, therefore in order to smooth it a little, capacitors are added that flattens the response. This capacitor is called a 'filter capacitor'. You can search for the waveforms on google, however if you are really enthusiastic about electronics, you can try "Multisim", which is a electronics simulating software, it will help you analyze any circuit before implementing it with read hardware.

It won't affect the transformer as long as you are not drawing, current upto its capacity. Also, the current of the 3 devices combined should not be greater than the rate current of the regulator.

The name is Hassam! :) If you use a digital multimeter, then simply turn it on the beep symbol and check if the terminal are shot, as if you touch any of the two pins with multimeter's nodes, the beep will sound indicating IC is dead.
A way to check the regulation of an IC is to simply connect its input to a DC adapter greater then 5v. Then check the output at the IC's output pins, if it gives 5v IC is well and good!

Dear Arsalan, The ckt diagram, with capacitor values, can be seen above in the article; you can use a bridge rectifier with a simple step down transformer giving an output voltage above 5v; usually you will get a 9v transformer in the market.
Try to do work on the multisim design yourself, no one is going to spoon feed you everything! :) However, if you are stuck any where, you can always ask for help.

Hi Suma, you can simply use zener diode for getting a constant voltage, but it won't give you high current at output, and you have to check whether whether a zener is available for voltage regulation as per your requirement.

@Sindhum: You can't do it with 78XX ICs but you can with the LM317.
Rectifier IC's are nothing but diodes in bridge configuration. If you don't want to use an IC you can form your own bridge using 4 diodes. If the voltage is DC, it will work if it is 12VAC it won't.

Should the caps be electrolytic or ceramic or does it matter?
Electrolytic capacitors are usually used to smooth large ripples in the rectified DC, thus they should be used before the IC. Whereas, ceramic capacitors smooth tiny oscillations coming from the output; thus they should be used at the output terminal of the IC.

The easiest way to understand is that you make two ckts, one with 7805 and one with 7905 using the same transformers terminals. Now, connect their ground together you power supply will complete. That means you have to use separate capacitors for each ckt.
Simply Google the term "7805 and 7905 voltage regulator circuit" on Google images, you will get enough reference diagrams for your ckt.
You can download the software from Multisim's website; as far as I know it's a paid software so you have to purchase the student edition. But you can ask you college or university who must be having a proper version installed in their labs.

im actually doing this as my project and started it few weeks ago. and i have problems of trying to make this dual power supply and the outcome is bad. so i really need your help.
im using a LM7805 for my +5v and i have made it out and working with a 9v DC battery and the ground that im currently using is the negative of my battery.
as when im trying to do the -5v, question starts to pop out. i did the same way as what you replied above to "ajinkya" on just replace the 7805 to 7905. i did the same way but i did not manage to get the -5v out.

Make the ground common in both the cases i.e even for 7905 connect the input terminal to the +ve of the battery and -ve to the ground.
