Endangered Species Of The World

Updated on October 22, 2011

An organism whose population is coming to an end is referred to as endangered specie. These include various plants and animals dying out ever year due to many factors caused by the human beings.

According to a survey, almost 27000 species of plants and animals become extinct every year. The statistics show that 124 species of amphibians, 1018 species of birds, 734 types of fish, 1096 types of mammals and 253 types of reptilian species have become endangered since 1996.

Animals are not the only organisms facing the danger of extinction, but plants arte equally in danger. Many species of plants face extinction every year and the rate has increased dramatically over the years.

Why Do The Organisms Get Extinct?

There are not one but many reasons why species of various organisms are heading towards their obliteration from the world. Following are some major reason for the animal and plant population downfall:

Increase In Population Of Human Beings, The Main Cause For The Downfall

The human population has increased over the centuries to a point where it has started to burden the earth. Increase in human population means a natural increase in habitation of the natural terrain and greater consumption of resources. In order to meet the demands of the increasing Homo sapiens, acts of deforestation and animal hunting take place.

Not only that but an increase in human population also means that animals and other species are driven out of their natural habitat, and due to that most animals suffer extreme environmental hazards and die out.

Increased number of human beings meant that a larger number of animals were being hunted, and over the course of the centuries, hundreds of species have already died out at the hands of man due to excessive hunting.

Deforestation

Deforestation is directly linked to the increase in human population.

Forests are removed to give humans more space to live and grow and to provide them with resources, especially wood. Deforestation does not only kill the plants but it also deprives the animals living there from their shelter and their food.

Deforestation has been playing its part in not only removing these organisms from the earth but it is one of the reasons why the earth’s environment has changed so rapidly.

Animal Hunting

Ever since the beginning of human race, humans have hunted animals for food and clothing.

But now, as the human population has increased by manifolds, the rate if animal hunting has also increased. Millions of animals die ever day to serve as a food for human beings. The animal skin and fur is used in the productions of clothes, cosmetics and many other things.

Many other benefits are also drawn from animals which increases their demand, hence also leading to animal extinction.

Pollution Caused By Human Beings

This too like others is related to the increase in human population. By using hazardous chemicals and dirtying our environment with our waste, we are unconsciously stealing lives of hundreds of plants and animals.

Most factories release their chemical wastes in rivers and ponds which infects the fish living there. This decreases the fish population, polluting the water and also disturbing the food chain.

DDT a common pesticide also acts a pollutant. Many of the animals are affected greatly by the use of DDT. For example it makes the eagle eggshell fragile and easily broken. Female Eagle incubating on them they collapse. This has decreased the eagle population over the time.

Smokes released by the engines of cars and other vehicles effects the plant and animal growth by polluting the air that they inhale.

The Extreme Change In Their Environment

The environment change is caused by deforestation and pollution. The polluted air and water cause an extreme change in the environment; this has an adverse effect on the plants and animals.

What Measures Should Be Taken To Save These Species From Extinction?

One must never stop hoping and trying even when the conditions are at their worst.

Today the rapid increase of human population is causing a damage that appears to be immortal.

However if we try, we can stop these animals and plants from dying out forever.

Following should be done to decrease the rate on animal and plant deaths every year:

  • Control the rapid increase in human births
  • Less pollution
  • Ban the production of DDT and such hazardous chemicals.
  • Decrease in deforestation and animal hunting by searching for alternatives.

If we try to do the above, we might stop the world from dying out with our own hands.
